Wijnaldum admits Jurgen Klopp has made him ‘an all-round player’
Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum has said that Jurgen Klopp has made him an all-round player during his time at Liverpool. The Dutchman made the switch to the Reds from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016 and he has since made 177 appearances, contributing 18 goals and 16 assists.
Wijnaldum has not made much of a goalscoring impact with the Reds compared to his former clubs but he has nonetheless emerged as a regular starter from the midfield. He has netted just 18 goals during his three-and-a-half seasons with the club but two of those came during the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona last year where the Reds recovered from a 3-0 first-leg deficit to seal a 4-0 aggregate triumph.
The Reds went on to lift the Champions League crown for the first time in 14 years and Wijnaldum will forever be remembered by the club’s faithful. The Dutchman’s current deal expires at the end of next season but talks are reportedly underway over a new three-year contract with the option for another 12 months.
The former PSV Eindhoven man has been attracting interest from top clubs in Spain and Italy but judging by the comments of late, he should be satisfied to commit to a new long-term deal with the reigning European champions.
