Stoke City manager delighted with much-needed win over Cardiff City
Speaking after the game, O’Neill was pleased with the performance from the team, who showed character and determination over the course of the 90 minutes, he told: “I’m delighted with the result and I thought a lot of aspects of the performance were very good at times. We showed a side of ourselves that has possibly been questioned this season in terms of resilience, but I thought we showed that from the start of the game. We had to deal with an awful lot of direct play, a lot of balls into our box, which we did very well. We created good chances in the game as well and obviously I’m delighted with the 2-0 win.I was most pleased with the character the players showed.”
The Potters took the lead at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday after Bluebirds striker Callum Paterson scored an own goal in the 25th minute. Joe Allen doubled the advantage for the club during the final quarter of the game as he scored from close range. With the victory, the club were able to move to the 19th spot ahead of Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town but most importantly, they now have a three-point gap between them and the drop zone.
Stoke will make the trip to Lancashire to face Blackburn Rovers in the upcoming game. The Potters have struggles on the road with just 13 points from 16 matches and they have a tough challenge on their hands, considering Tony Mowbray’s side have lost just three league games over the course of the campaign.
