Virgil van Dijk would recommend Matthijs de Ligt to Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has said that he would recommend compatriot Matthijs de Ligt to the Reds, should the club ask his opinion on the Dutchman’s qualities. De Ligt has earned rave reviews since making the jump to the Ajax first-team two years ago and he has since progressed to become a regular at the heart of the Netherlands backline alongside Van Dijk.

Speaking after the Nations League game against France, Van Dijk suggested that de Ligt will surely be on the radar of several elite clubs across Europe and he would recommend the Dutchman’s signing to Liverpool, should they hold an interest, he quipped: “He will be on the lists, because they have enough scouts at the club. But the best scout still stands next to De Ligt in the center of Orange? No, but if they need my opinion at Liverpool, I’ll give it.”

Over the past 18 months, “De Ligt has been widely fancied to pursue a fresh challenge away from Ajax“ but the youngster has decided to stay put with none of the clubs showing the intent to prise him away from the Capital outfit. Nonetheless, the teenager is likely to move on from
“the Amsterdam-based club“
sooner rather than later and the move could potentially happen at the end of the season.

Aside from De Ligt, midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been another who has been frequently tipped to make way from Erik ten Hag’s side but so far, the Eredivisie outfit have resisted the option to sell. Most recently sporting director Marc Overmars acknowledged the ongoing interest from Barcelona among others but he also suggested that Ajax are unlikely to consider a mid-season sale for any of their key players within the first-team squad. Ajax are currently five points behind table-toppers PSV Eindhoven after the first 12 league games.
