Marco van Ginkel confirms Chelsea have opened contract talks with him

Netherlands international Marco van Ginkel has confirmed that Chelsea have opened talks over a new contract with him. The Dutchman has endured a frustrating time with injuries and he has not played a competitive game over the past two years. His current deal with the Blues expires at the end of the month but the west London side have started negotiations over a possible renewal.

Speaking to AD, Van Ginkel confirmed that the contract negotiations and said that he is grateful over the club’s confidence in him despite his injury troubles, he told: “My agent, Karel Jansen, is in talks with Chelsea about a new contract for me. I am very happy at this show of confidence in me by the club. It is quite something when a club tries to keep a player who has been out injured so long and in these uncertain times as well. If a deal can be done I expect to make my comeback in Chelsea’s Under-23 side.”

Van Ginkel has been with the Blues since the summer of 2013 when he made the move from Vitesse. However, he has made only two competitive appearances for the capital outfit and has spent much of his time on loan with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch top-flight. He was the captain of PSV during the 2017/2018 season as they were crowned the league champions.
Van Ginkel played a key role during the course of the campaign with 16 goals from 33 appearances. Shortly after that season, the Dutchman underwent an anterior cruciate ligament injury and he has since failed to make a comeback to the playing field. The midfielder has recently returned to training and reports claim that he could integrate with the development squad next term as part of the recovery process.
