GAKPO IDENTIFIED AS POTENTIAL UNITED TARGET

PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo has been identified as a potential transfer target for Premier League side Manchester United. The Dutchman has been likened to compatriot Robin Van Persie and Frenchman Thierry Henry due to his playing time. Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie were teammates at Arsenal.

The interest of Manchester United in Gakpo was confirmed by English publication Daily Mirror.Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is keen to add a new attacker to his squad before the end of this summer’s transfer window. To this effect, he has his eyes on two players from the Dutch Eredivisie including Gakpo. Apart from Manchester United, Gakpo has also been linked with a move to North London club Arsenal. The 23-year-old could follow in the footsteps of Robin Van Persie if he signs for Arsenal or Manchester United. £40m is the transfer fee required to sign Gakpo from Dutch team PSV Eindhoven this summer according to various reports in the media.

In addition to Arsenal and Manchester United, fellow Premier League side Leeds United are also interested in Gakpo. At Manchester United, Ten Hag has his eyes on Gakpo and Ajax star Antony as a possible transfer target though it must be pointed out that Manchester United will need to spend over £80m to sign Brazilian international Antony from Ajax Amsterdam.
The long-term future of Gakpoat PSV is even more in doubt in comparison to a week ago after his Dutch team failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage. The Dutch international was unable to prevent PSV from being eliminated at the playoff stage of the Champions League this season. PSV were beaten 1-0 at home by Scottish team Rangers in their playoff second leg clash for a 3-2 aggregate defeat after the two teams shared a four-goal thriller in the first leg in Scotland.
