LINEKER PRAISES VAN PERSIE

Former England striker Gary Lineker has praised Robin van Persie by saying that he is better than Didier Drogba or Fernando Torres.

The Dutchman had been out for a significant period of time this season owing to injury, but returned to produce stellar form that has seen him score 11 goals in his last eight appearances in all competitions.

Drogba has gone goalless in his last six games for Chelsea, while British transfer record holder Fernando Torres is yet to open his account under the Blue banner. Wayne Rooney has also been far from the goalscoring machine he was last season.

And Lineker wrote of Robin Van Persie in his column for The News of the World: "This is a man who should be scoring 25-30 goals a season. Yet throughout his career he's struggled even to hit the 20-mark regularly.

"When he's hot, he's devastating. On their current form I'd take him above Torres, Drogba and Rooney every day of the week.

"But if you were asking me whether, on the evidence of his whole career, I'd go for him ahead of the other three and I'd have to say not a chance.

"Injuries have obviously played their part in Van Persie never quite hitting the heights."
